Jompa Lama and Lakpa Coma Lama

Jompa with her little baby

I visit Lakpa and Jompa, my friends from 2002 and 2005. Jompa has a new-born baby less than one month old. She and her husband Phurpa are happy that they now have a son in addition to their two daughters who are at school in Kathmandu.

Jompa’s mother-in-law assisted at the delivery of the baby, and Phurpa cut the umbilical cord. He was very scared, he says, and adds that the lack of medical facilities in Nar is probably the greatest problem in the village. He is worried if the baby gets enough vitamins and if it gets the right inoculations.

For three months in winter Lakpa, Jompa and their families move to Kathmandu. Jompa finds Kathmandu too expensive and prefers life in Nar. Jompa is 33 years old. Her husband, Phurpa, is 37. He worked in Korea for four or five years and was away when I was in Nar the first time in 2002. But he never made a profit from the work.

So many young Nepalese men and women now seek their fortunes abroad in countries like Korea and Saudi Arabia, due to the lack of job opportunities at home. It would be interesting to learn more about their conditions of life abroad and whether they return disappointed.

Lakpa and her mother

Lakpa has three children. A boy and a girl are lamas in Kathmandu, and the youngest daughter is at school in Koto. Lakpa is divorced and lives with her mother and family.

While there were no guesthouses here in 2002, there are now one or two
– and the next two large guesthouses are almost finished.
