Phu Village

Chortens at the gompa - and snowy mountains above the trail back
to Meta and Nar
According to sources in Phu,
Phu has 30-50 houses and 180-300 inhabitants.
Probably the village is gradually getting depopulated and people have moved to Kathmandu
- and
some even to New York City.
On the other hand a number of new houses
have been built since I was here
four years ago. In those few years,
also, the small children have turned into
sometimes quite aggressive
beggars.

I visit the gompa and drink butter tea
in the kitchen and eat buckwheat bread.
A mad girl is tethered to a pole in the wasteland outside the gompa.

Above: The barley harvest is over. Now in the
courtyards grains are separated from the straw by hand (right) and threshed
manually with a flail (left and middle)

The big fortress-like houses at the
top of the mountain used to be a gompa.
From here the lamas and the
villagers fought Chinese invaders.

The middle above:
After the grain has been threshed in the field, it is carried home
on the back in big bags
