Bagan

Bagan, formerly Pagan, was the ancient capital of several ancient kingdoms in Myanmar. It is located in the dry central plains of the country on the western banks of the Ayeyarwady River (Irrawaddy River), 145 km southwest of Mandalay.
UNESCO has long tried unsuccessfully to designate Bagan as a World Heritage Site. But the chances are slim as the government has renovated many temples and pagodas without taking into consideration their former architectural styles.

Bagan is one of the richest archaeological sites in Asia and cover an area of 40 sq-km. The majority of its buildings were built in the 11th to 13th centuries. Bagan entered its golden period as a religious and cultural centre in 1057. Just over 200 years later it declined, and in 1287 it was overrun by the Mongols of Kublai Khan.

Mount Popa / Nat worship

Mount Popa is 50 km southeast of Bagan. Mount Popa is in fact an extinct volcano which dominates the area with its imposing expanse. At its foot is a magnificent rocky outcrop, a table mountain topped with shimmering gold stupas - this is Popa Daung Kalat, usually confused with Mt Popa itself. Popa Daung Kalat is the favoured home of 37 Burmese nats (animist spirits). For centuries newly-crowned kings of central Burma made pilgrimages here to seek the nats' prognosis on the future of their reigns. Pre-dating Buddhism, spirit worship is central to Burmese life, and Mount Popa ranks as Burma's most important spiritual power spot.

The Nats are an extraordinary mixed collection of deities, including spirits of trees, rivers, ancestors, snakes, and the ghosts of people who have met a violent or tragic death. They like a peaceful life, and they can wreak destructive vengeance on people who annoy them. Originally they were numberless. But in time a canonical number of thirty-six was fixed for them, with the Buddha included as the thirty-seventh. The Nats were worshipped with orgiastic ceremonies, and trance-rites of spiritual possession. Even today the Nats exert a powerful influence on the thought and experience of modern Burmese. http://www.circatrade.com/Nats.htm

Jordnødder kværnes til olie

On the way you may stop at one of the primitive roadside mills where you may watch docile buffalos slowly circumnavigating the central stone, grinding peanuts into oil. This is a good opportunity to taste palm wine and jaggery, the local candy made from palm sugar.

Bemærk pengesedlerne i tempeldekorationerne.

Mount Popa er hovedtemplet for nat-tilbedelsen i Burma. Udover den sædvanlige tempeludsmykning er her også et stort antal aber.
