Tilicho Lake

Tilicho Lake    -    click to enlarge

Tilicho Lake at 4900m is one of the highest lakes in the world. It is 4 km long and 1 km wide and has no visible outlet. The south-western shore is a glacial wall, while a segment of the north-eastern shore is a sheer cliff.
It is an area of rough and wild beauty.

I followed the Lower Trail, which is said to be dangerous, but it was quite alright, although steep. You have to concentrate and watch your steps.
Two Frenchmen actually preferred the Lower Trail to the Upper Trail because there is a very steep descent from the Upper Trail to Base Camp.

The trail from Base Camp towards Tilicho Lake

I found the hike up to the lake very long and slow, but Tilicho Lake is definitely worth the effort. A large turquoise lake with brown, barren mountains on one side and the ice-crested peaks of the Grand Barrier on the other side from which a glacier spills into the lake. Very spectacular scenery.

A new lodge, Tilicho Peak, is under construction between Khangsar and Base Camp, above the monastery half an hour above Khangsar. It is situated near the place where the “seasonal” trail to Yak Kharka begins. It is a very convenient overnight stop on the trip back from Tilicho Lake.
However, my porter and I decided to continue three hours to Yak Kharka, which meant that the day turned into a very long and hard 11 hours’ walk.

Alone, Dean tried to cross the two passes above Tilicho to Jomsom, but he got caught in the snow and had to return to Manang

The last days have been cloudy with a bit of snow, especially at night.
I crossed Thorung La in clouds without any views.

Muktinath

Muktinath, a sacred place for both Hindus and Buddhists,
is situated at an altitude of 3,710 metres.
Behind the temple there are 108 faucets in the shape of a head of a bull.
Pilgrims who visit the temple take a holy bath in each of these spouts.
But as the water is ice cold it requires burning desire and courage.

The day trip to Jhong/Dzong, Changur/Chungur is
another highlight on the Annapurna Circuit.
Culturally and religiously, these old Tibetan villages in Lower Mustang are very interesting and  they offer beautiful views across Muktinath valley.
