Ghyaru to Manang
An old fort guarding Manang valley between Ghyaru and Ngawal

Ghyaru
Ghyaru has about 40 houses, but only 10 houses
are inhabited by local families (Gurung and Manangi). The rest are
Gurkha immigrants.
At night there is a thunderstorm over the
Annapurnas with constant lightning in the sky.

The 84-year-old lama at
first felt too weak (eye and knee problems) to take me on a tour of the
gompa. Instead I went with his son, but at the end of the visit the old
lama turned up anyway, and he was his old 2005 talkative and
enthusiastic self.

The gompa in
Braga
Braga is a
Tibetan-style village of about 150 houses.
The gompa is the largest in the district.

I hiked with Dean,
an inveterate American traveller and adventurer whose “home” is in a
storage box somewhere in the States.
From Ice Lake we climbed a hill on the right hand side with
magnificent views of the Annapurnas, the Grand Barrier, Pisang Peak,
Kang Guru and the Manang Valley.
