Ghanpokhara &
Ghalegaun

From Ghalegaun there is a fantastic view
of the whole Annapurna range, including Lamjung Himal, Annapurna II
and Manaslu, a view I only caught briefly at sunset and sunrise
before the clouds settled in.

Ghalegaun has about 240 houses,
among them a
traditional elliptical Gurung house.
People in the village are self-sufficient. All they need to buy in
Besisahar is petrol, oil, salt and masala.
Above right: A view from
Ghalegaun towards Khudi and
Marshyangdi valley
on the Annapurna Circuit

People in Ghanpokhara &
Ghalegaun

It is only half an
hour's walk between
Ghanpokhara and
Ghalegaun
Time to enjoy your tea and
tobacco.

People
eat their
dal bhat
(rice and lentils)
sitting on the kitchen floor round the fire and the kerosene lamp.
At times the kitchens are incredibly dark and smoky because the
smoke can only escape through a very small window or through the
roof.
(Apart from Bhujung no village on the trek has electricity. But
Ghalegaun may get it in 2007).
The atmosphere in the houses and the villages is the way things were
in many places in the 80s on the Annapurna trek before the building
of the huge guest houses and hotels you find today.

An early
