Marpha to Tatopani

Marpha

Marpha, a large Thakali village, exhibits the typical Thak Khola architecture of flat roofs and narrow, paved alleys and passageways. Marpha boasts a unique medieval drainage system which runs underneath the flagstone-paved streets. Marpha is the apple town of Nepal. The bountiful apple orchards produce some of the best apples in the country. Apple cider and apple brandy are considered the best products of Marpha.

Tukuche

Tukuche is one of the most important trading centers of the Thakali villages. Wool, salt and semi-precious stones were exchanged here for rice, cigarettes and cloth. The Trans-Himalayan trade finally died out with the Chinese takeover of Tibet. The grand stone houses were used as stores for salt and grain. The businesslike Thakali have since sought their fortune in tourism.

Æbledyrkningen i Marpha og Tukuche er et nyt fænomen som kun er et par og tyve år gammelt. Salthandelen gik i stå i 1959.
